The process
How it works
The process
Capsule endoscopy delivers an exceptionally high detection rate while being painless, minimally invasive, and radiation-free. Enjoy the comfort and privacy of a home procedure while helping to save hospital resources. Curious about the process? We’ll guide you through every step, from preparation to recovery.
Understanding the procedure
How it’s done
Capsule endoscopy offers a very high diagnostic yield, rivalling hospital colonoscopy in terms of results, pain, and patient experience. However, it may not be the right diagnostic tool for everyone, depending on individual circumstances.
Find out if it’s suitable for you by taking the eligibility quiz

Step 1
Initial consultation
If you meet the medical criteria, we’ll arrange a video consultation with one of our specialist UK doctors. We’ll ask you to be ready with a checklist of your medical history, medication list, and other relevant information. During the consultation, the doctor will determine if it is safe and appropriate to proceed with the capsule endoscopy.

Step 2
Receiving your kit
You swallow a capsule that contains a small disposable camera. The capsule is the size of a vitamin pill. The camera takes thousands of pictures as it travels along your gut. The camera sends the pictures wirelessly to a data recorder that you wear on your waist.

Step 3
Preparing for the procedure
You’ll be on a restricted diet for the 12 hours before you swallow the capsule which means only clear soups and liquids. To make sure the capsule can travel the full 30 feet of your digestive system while capturing the tiniest details in high resolution, you’ll need to take a bowel prep laxative, similar to those used for a hospital endoscopy. We’ll send you this medication along with the capsule kit, and we’ll provide clear instructions to guide you.

Step 4
The painless procedure
Capsule endoscopy is a painless procedure with no needles or sedation. You simply swallow the capsule and get on with your day.

Step 5
Capsule pass and data collection
You will naturally pass the capsule in a bowel movement, and it can be flushed away. The images are then uploaded for analysis by our team of UK doctors. We will arrange for the recording device to be collected, or you can drop it off at a parcel service.

Step 6
Report and results
We guarantee a full report within a week, including next step recommendations and referrals if needed.
Safe and simple
Minimal risk with maximum comfort
Capsule endoscopy carries a minimal 0.5% risk, making it the safest method for diagnosing small and large bowel conditions (see chart here). Because it’s painless and straightforward to operate from home, you can relax, knowing you have a higher chance of diagnosis and detection compared to hospital endoscopy* without the usual concerns of embarrassment or pain.
Your understanding and consent on all aspects of this procedure are essential, and we will make sure you are fully informed about the preparation process and the minimal risk of complications*.
